Did you know that electric Hi-lo Water coolers are required?
Hi-lo water coolers (dual-height fountains) are required by ADA §211/§602 and building codes in public or common-use areas. At least 50% of fountains must be wheelchair-accessible, and a single hi-lo unit can satisfy both requirements.
Key Exceptions:
Occupant load ≤15: No drinking fountains required.
Detention/correctional areas: Fountains serving only non-accessible or holding cells are exempt.
IPC substitution: After one high and one low unit, up to 50% of fountains can be replaced with bottle fillers or coolers.
Bottom line: Unless your space qualifies for an exception, plan for at least one hi-lo cooler to meet accessibility and code compliance.
